Rainbow Snippets

I’m almost there for nano 2K left to go. Huzzah. Also managed to make all my finals for monday but now my cat is sick and hasn’t eaten for days. Waiting to hear back on his bloodwork. Sigh.

I have something new (Sorry Brendan we’re leaving you in the attic where the ghost just turned out your flashlight). It’s a Christmas novella about two married women and their boyfriend who all just happen to be monster slayers. They’ve been given a suite by their boss to rest and celebrate the holidays. Boss lady failed to mention it’s a haunted former gangster hotel in upper Wisconsin where things are never actually quiet. (I’ve seen some of these former gangster hideouts as I used to live in the area. Miss it)

It’s a little longer than six sentences but I wanted you to get to meet all three of them.

Zia stretched, getting out of their SUV. The north wind’s attack brutalized her after the long ride in the hot vehicle. The car’s temperature gauge had read eighteen degrees, which seemed optimistic. Dolores exited the SUV, stomping and huffing, immediately blowing on her gloved hands. Originally from Miami, Dolores’s Puerto Rican-Seminole ancestry seemed to prevent her from adapting to cold. That alone might doom this Christmas adventure before it began. Zia reassured herself that her wife had agreed to this, but she might regret it now.

“Damn, it’s cold enough to freeze your nuts straight off,” Kane groaned as he bailed out of the back seat.

“Luckily, Dolores and I have no worries,” Zia replied. Kane had started as their work partner a year and a half ago, but at Halloween, things changed. The affable druid had become their boyfriend. “You, on the other hand…”

“May become the third woman in our merry band of monster hunters,” Kane moaned.

Zia snorted as Dolores hurried to the trunk to yank her luggage out. She wasn’t waiting for them to get a move on. She hauled it at top speed to their hotel without stopping to appreciate their surroundings.

Zia, on the other hand, lingered, studying the building. It looked more like a colonial mansion than a hotel. Its columnated front had been festooned with real boughs of pine. Wreaths decorated three stories’ worth of windows, and pine trees ringed the building without crowding it. They were distant enough to allow sunlight to kiss the building but close enough to assure visitors they were in the north woods.

Zia, Dolores and Kane all possess the magic to fight monsters but all they want now is a nice Christmas break. Partners in life and at work as monster-slayers for a group known as the Clipeum, they’ve been risking life and limb keeping humanity safe. They’ve won their hard-earned vacation their boss has set up for them: a week in a small hotel in upper Wisconsin. Their boss mentioned in passing it used to be a gangster retreat in the heyday of prohibition.

Married for some time, Zia and Dolores were surprised to have Kane in their life, first at work and now in their hearts. They’re looking forward to their first holiday today as a threesome and the ladies can’t wait to see their first pagan Yule celebration with Kane. All they want is some quiet relaxation. What they get is something entirely different.

Gangster ghosts, would-be witches, over-enthusiastic children, animated snowmen and a century old former gangster moll who has a little spark still in her add up to a not-so-restful Christmas. Zia, Dolores and Kane trade comfy clothing and relaxation for spellcasting and ghost wrangling. Still they might just be able to rescue themselves a Merry Yule from all the chaos.

The Mysterious Charm series explores the magical community of Great Britain (also known as Albion) in the 1920s, particularly those associated in some way with one Lord Geoffrey Carillon. In The Cards is the story of his new sister-in-law, Laura Penhallow, as she attempts to rebuild her life after surviving tuberculosis, a dangerous magical drink, and planning her sister’s society wedding. She has accepted an invitation to the Amberly’s home on a remote island off Cornwall in hopes of making a few new connections – and possibly even making a match herself.

Excerpt In this excerpt of chapter two, Laura meets Galen (and his best friend, Martin) for the first time after arriving on the island. You can read the entire first chapter through the buy links pages, and the series can be read in any order. Happy reading, whatever that is!

“Ahoy, the traveller!” Laura heard a voice calling down, someone coming down the path. Two someones. One was tow-headed, one of the shining blondes, sharply dressed in a jacket and slacks and a deep purple vest. The other was dark-haired, trailing behind, wearing rather scruffier clothing. It wasn’t the cut or the fit, precisely, but a sense of wear around the knees and elbows. Despite their differences, they came rushing down as if they were a pair of horses pulling as a team, wheeling and moving together.

“Beg pardon, we didn’t realise the portal had started up. Galen Amberley, of course, in case you’ve forgotten. This is Martin Taylor. We’ve been friends since school. He’s here to fill out the numbers a bit.” He had the upper class drawl Laura had gotten used to from her brother-in-law. It was a voice that assumed the world lay before him, ready to be taken up, or at least provide him all the amusements he might want.

“And because Galen gets tremendously bored at these things. Can’t do without supervision.” Martin’s voice was a bright tenor, somehow sharper. Well-educated, but like his clothes, not quite of the same cut. There was a twinkle in his eyes that Laura thought promised good humour, at least.

“Is this your trunk? Do you mind a charm on it? Martin’s quite good with that one that makes the thing not so blasted heavy.”

Laura nodded. To her surprise, Martin didn’t make a move to do the charm, but stuck his hands in his pockets, as if waiting for something.

Galen glanced over, then laughed. “Martin insists I play fair, even if Mother won’t.” He didn’t continue, however.

Laura let the silence draw out for a good fifteen seconds, then said, amused, “I presume there is more to it than that rather opaque sentence?”

Martin grinned at her. “See, I said she’d prefer it.”

Laura just raised her eyebrow. “I can stand here all day. Your mother might worry though.”

“Oh, it’s Mother who’s the complication. And Father. They’re looking to marry me off, and Martin insists you be warned before you’re thrown into the fray. Have the walk up to collect yourself for the challenge ahead.”

Laura blinked. “That’s rather bold.”

“He’s the bold one.” Galen gestured at Martin. “He was a Boar, at school. He is supposed to charge boldly.”

Laura snorted. “I’ve never thought the house selections were all that.” She eyed him up and down. “I suppose you’re Fox?”

“A hit, a very palpable hit!” Martin crowed.

Galen looked amused. “Well, I make it easy.” He had a deep amethyst ring, matching his vest. “At your service for charismatic plotting, yes.”

“So long as it’s charismatic.” Laura felt a bit off balance, and she was retreating to the silly pleasantries that had kept her safe for long enough. She did not like the undertow here, being thrown into the water with no idea what Galen or his parents were plotting. But there was nothing for it now but seeing if they’d tell her, unless she wanted to storm off in a snit to an empty house.

The semester is over and I can scarcely believe it so now I’m swamped with grading all the things that go with heading into finals which is why I’m behind on reading and even my own cover reveal so the new thing will have to wait until next week.

Have a wee bit more of These Haunted Hills Brendan point of view as he investigates a haunted home with Josh’s team.

The gloominess of the attic held more promise. There was that heaviness he’d experienced in the hotel. Brendan didn’t know if that was just an author’s overactive imagination or if it was possible he had some slight psychic powers. The rational part of him thought that was ridiculous but the part of him who had listened to his Irish grandmother believed it could be true.

Then his flashlight died.

“Brendan, did you turn that off?” Josh asked.

Chapter One
“Are you sure this is what we need?” Elaine lowered the hairbrush and shifted her gaze to Martha’s face, reflected in the dressing table mirror.

Martha quirked her mouth. “We’ve been over this. Just give her a chance. You can’t keep up with our client requests.”

Elaine tossed the brush on the top of the dressing table. “Because you and Lucia don’t help.” She swept her titian hair back and up into a high ponytail.

Martha handed her an elastic. “We’re not having this argument again. Lucia and I are finished with that side of the business. We can’t keep putting people off or they’ll find other houses to visit.

Elaine knotted a hunter-green ribbon in her hair. “Oh please. Like they could find anyone like me. Or what we offer here.” She shoved away from the vanity and turned to face her sister. “Fine. We’ll see how she handles herself. But the timing sucks.”

Martha placed her hands on her sister’s shoulders. “We had to work with the dates she gave us. Lucia thinks she’d be a good fit. We’ve had our trip planned for a long time. We trust you to make a good decision.

Alone. Again. “I’m not worried about making a wrong decision. Who’ll sub for her? Benita and Fallon are on holiday. No one else likes heavy pain play.”

Martha grinned wickedly at Elaine. “Maybe you could give it a go?”

Elaine rolled her eyes at her sister. “The switch gene is not in me. Go on, go on your holiday. I’ll figure it out.” Somehow. Damn, I miss Roxy.

Lucia and Myfanwy stood next to the car, their breath visible as they chatted in the frosty gray morning. Millie loaded the last of their luggage into the trunk and closed the lid gently. Martha placed her hand on Elaine’s forearm. “You have our itinerary. We can return if it’s an emergency”—she straightened to her full height and squared her shoulders—“but we are not to be disturbed unless it is.”

Elaine rolled her eyes at her sister. “Yes, sister dear, goddess forbid I interrupt your honeymoon. Like you haven’t already had one. I won’t bother you.” She let the devil show in her eyes. “I expect you’ll be tied up.”

Martha settled her fedora on her head. “I’m not going to waste my time replying to that, and please for the love of all that’s good, try to get along with Petra. We don’t have any other candidates.”

“So we should settle?” Elaine placed her hand on her hip.

“No one is saying settle. What I am saying is do not make a snap judgment. Or piss her off so much she leaves.”

Elaine shrugged. “If she can’t stand the heat…”

“Martha, we need to leave now.” Lucia spoke over Elaine, her voice a soft command. “I’m sure Elaine and Petra will sort things.”

“See, even your Miss agrees.” Elaine smirked at Martha.

Martha smiled at Elaine, not giving her the argument she craved. “Try it some time. You might find you like it.”

“Ha. A cold day in hell. Go now or you’ll miss the ferry.”

Martha gave Elaine a quick hard hug before she hurried down the steps to the car.
