Oops I was attending a virtual Poe lecture hosted by NYC’s Boroughs of the Dead tours and totally forgot to do this.

I have to drive to Pittsburgh tomorrow as my birthday is next week and my family wants me home. Sigh.

I’m picking up where I left off with These Haunted Hills, Josh and Brendan are having their first kiss when the sounds of glass breaking in the haunted hotel startles them.

Both of them whipped around to face the hotel. There was no glass of course. Both of them knew it. Josh couldn’t breathe, a weight as heavy as the hills settling on him.

“God, I’m suddenly terrified,” Brendan whispered, shaking next to him.

“Me too.”

Brendan edged away even as Josh turned on the camera again. His erected fell and his nerves sang too loudly for him to care. He saw nothing but recorded anyhow.

“Are you there?” he asked the wind.

Brendan pulled on his shirt. “Are you insane? Let’s get out of here. We woke up something that doesn’t want us here.”

“I know.”

It’s amazing how it gets worse each week this year. Done what I’ve can donation and otherwise but of course feels like not nearly enough.

So still in no mood to talk about much. I’ll just drop my link and run. Picking up with These Haunted Hills right where I’ve left off: their first kiss outside of the haunted murder hotel

Brendan leaned in, his hand slipping along Joshua’s neck. His lips brushed Joshua’s lips lightly at first. Hunger swamped them, hands and lips demanding more and more as they explored. Brendan broke away first, his eyes wild as a startled stag. Josh expected the words ‘what the hell am I doing?’ expected his heart to tear into pieces.

Instead Brendan pulled him closer, kissing him again, tongues dancing with each other. Josh ran his hands across Brendan’s lean strong back, no longer fighting the fire inside himself. Acutely aware he wasn’t the only one hard as steel, he drank deeply of the kiss like a man long denied water.

A loud sound of glass shattering shocked them apart as sure as if Thor had hurled a bolt their way.

I’m pretty heartbroken after everything that has happened in this country this week so I have little else to say. I’m just going to share this snippet and go. I’ve hardly been able to write at all.

I’m picking up with These Haunted Hills where I left off. Josh and Brendan are discussing getting a ladder to look into the upper floor where they thought they saw a shadow moving in the haunted hotel.

Josh nodded. “We might be able to use one to peek inside though. We’ll need to test the wall and see if it’s sturdy enough to bear any sort of weight.”

“We can do that. Might have to be you. You’re limber like a squirrel.”

Josh felt eyes on him. He turned off the camera, realizing Brendan’s gaze no longer raked the tree tops.

“I’m clumsy. I would find a way to fall off the ladder in the most comical way possible,” he continued.

Josh laughed hard. “Surely it’s not as bad as that.”

“I’m surprised I haven’t fallen over a hill yet trailing after you.”

“You just have to keep your eyes on the roots.”

“That’s not where my eyes are usually looking.”

The throatiness of Brendan’s response brought heat to Josh’s cheeks. Brendan’s lake deep eyes burned. Josh swallowed hard, trying to stave off the fire spreading down him to unrulier parts.

“Oh,” was all he could say. He meant to say something witty, he wanted to be suave but he could barely breathe, every nerve sparking.

I don’t even know how it’s the weekend. I’m behind on everything so I’ll keep this short. I’m picking right up with These Haunted Hills right where we left off. Brendan and Joshua are outside the murder hotel and saw something moving in the second story window.

“Look to see if there’s anything in the trees that would be casting a shadow that direction,” he ordered.

Brendan spun in a slow circle, head canted back as he obeyed. “Nothing. I don’t think it could just be leaves. It’s too solid.”

“Damn, it’s gone.” Josh kept the camera trained on the window. “There’s no way of getting up there from the inside.”

“Doesn’t look safe to bring a ladder and try from out here. We’d probably end up going through what’s left of the floor.”

The semester is over. I can delve into my research now. Or I could watch crap off my DVR which is 97% full. But lately what I’ve been doing is listening to Murder Squad, Morbid, Mountain Murders, My Favorite Murder and This Podcast Will Kill You, podcasts….

Picking up where I left off with These Haunted Hills Josh and Brendan are headed back to the haunted murder hotel.

Josh thrilled every time Brendan brought the book up. He’d never been there for the birth of a novel and there was something contagious about Brendan’s excitement. They were within the shadow of the ruins, staring into the broken windows. Brendan jumped, grabbing Josh’s arm.

“Did you see that?” he pointed up at the remains of the second story window.

“No.”

“There.”

Brendan gesticulated wildly. Something dark moved across the window as if pacing. It was too tall to be a raccoons or other animal. It didn’t move like one. If there was anything Josh knew, it was how the local wildlife moved. He whipped up his camera, trying to capture the movement.
