Writing this up on the fly as I fail miserably at keeping on point with my lectures.

Still in These Haunted Hills They’re out of the attic and Brendan has been left with Hoshi and her twin Kasumi (who is talking first)

“I don’t mean to be strange but has anyone told you have a very odd aura. I wasn’t going to say anything but it’s hard for me to take my eyes off it.”

Brendan stared for a moment, trying to figure out what to say to that.

“I agree,” Hoshi said.

“I can honestly say no one has ever mentioned the word aura to me.” Brendan knew what they were of course even before he had started researching this for the novel. It was one thing more he wasn’t sure he believed in but he was willing to entertain the notion for the sisters. He didn’t want to insult them. “What’s wrong with it?”

I survived the first week of classes. Judging by my interactions this week, this is going to be a good semester with good students so huzzah. As for me I’m far more banged up than I first thought so I’m one big bruise. HOW I hurt myself this bad just falling over my own two feet, I have no idea.

Continuing with These Haunted Hills, the team is in the attic where the ghost has manipulated their flashlights.

Brendan heard nothing but hoped there would be something on the digital recording. Nothing else happened for several minutes as they prowled the large attic. A sudden loud knock made Brendan jump so hard, he nearly fell over a box.

Josh, far more calmly than Brendan could have managed, called down to Hunter. “Did you guys knock on something?”

“No,” came Hunter’s response.

“Do that again if you can,” Cassia said and another two knocks sounded.

Brendan had to restrain himself from showing them what the fight or flight response was all about. It couldn’t be more than twenty steps to the staircase. He didn’t run for it. That would be too embarrassing but self-preservation thoughts did echo in his brain.

Finally Hoshi let out a soft sigh. “He’s really tapping my energy.”

“Okay we better go down then. Brendan want to take point?” Josh asked.

“Gladly.”

I made it home to begin the new semester. The day I arrive my less than 5 year old TV gave up the ghost and then yesterday I took a terrible fall and banged up just about everything. Whee.

I’m continuing with These Haunted Hills (which I’d be out hiking in right now because it’s somehow 73 degrees in Ohio in Jan. except i tore up my knee). We left Brendan, Josh, Cass and Hoshi in an attic where a ghost has turned out the lights the last we saw them.

“His name was Kent,” Josh offered. “Kent, we’re here to talk. You can turn my flashlight off to show us you’re here.”

Brendan stared at the thin line of light, waiting to see what would happen. The light went off. Josh and Cassia whooped. Brendan edged toward the staircase out of the attic. The light came back on. He’d been watching Josh’s hands and knew Josh wasn’t putting him on.

“That is amazing,” Brendan said.

“I know. Can you do it again, Kent?” Josh asked and the light went back off and on.

“Is there anything we can do? Anything you’d like us to know?” Hoshi asked.

If he answered, she gave no signs.

Once again I’m behind in commenting from last week. That should be my new year’s resolution. Don’t be so slow. In my defense I’m home with the parents which I don’t get to do often so we’re running all over.

I’m going back to These Haunted Hills. The last we’ve seen of them, Brendan and Josh are ghost hunting with the team in a haunted house. They’re in the attic and the lights have gone out. (Cass is Josh’s best friend Hoshi and Kasume are psychic twins)

Then his flashlight died.

“Brendan, did you turn that off?” Josh asked.

Fresh snippet “No.” Brendan slapped the flashlight in his hand. “It went dead.”

“Here we go,” Cass said, drawing out the word Go.

“Someone hung themselves here.” Hoshi pointed to the rafters.

Brendan studied them, trying to picture it. He knew that to be true. Madison had turned it up in her research. Had she slipped that to Hoshi and they were putting him on? Why he couldn’t even guess at. No, he’d accept that Hoshi and Kasumi were on the level.

Hope everyone’s holidays were fun. I did well until I managed to destroy the files with all of my class notes and only part of them were in dropbox correctly. This will be the last round for Ghosts, Gangsters and Garland Thanks for all your kind words about it.

Zia broke ranks and then meandered closer to the snowman army.

“They did a good job on these,” she said, inspecting the closest one.

“Um, did that one just move?” Dolores pointed to one of the snowmen in the rear of the battalion.

“This is not the time to crack out your best Jack Torrance imitation,” Kane scolded, thinking on the moving topiary in King’s iconic book. A boy ghost was one thing; creepy moving snowmen would likely ruin the holiday.
“I’m being serious,” Dolores argued, and Kane wanted to protest.

The snowman settled it for her. It rolled forward as if on a cart. Its snowy features morphed into a vicious configuration.

“What the hell!” Zia made the sign of the horns, backpedaling fast.

Zia, Dolores and Kane all possess the magic to fight monsters but all they want now is a nice Christmas break. Partners in life and at work as monster-slayers for a group known as the Clipeum, they’ve been risking life and limb keeping humanity safe. They’ve won their hard-earned vacation their boss has set up for them: a week in a small hotel in upper Wisconsin. Their boss mentioned in passing it used to be a gangster retreat in the heyday of prohibition.

Married for some time, Zia and Dolores were surprised to have Kane in their life, first at work and now in their hearts. They’re looking forward to their first holiday today as a threesome and the ladies can’t wait to see their first pagan Yule celebration with Kane. All they want is some quiet relaxation. What they get is something entirely different.

Gangster ghosts, would-be witches, over-enthusiastic children, animated snowmen and a century old former gangster moll who has a little spark still in her add up to a not-so-restful Christmas. Zia, Dolores and Kane trade comfy clothing and relaxation for spellcasting and ghost wrangling. Still they might just be able to rescue themselves a Merry Yule from all the chaos.
