Merry Yule everyone. I’m running around baking all the things. Hope everyone’s holidays, whichever you celebrate, aren’t too stressful.

Here’s a little bit more of Ghosts, Gangsters and Garland

Dolores tapped a finger against her lips before asking, “And how did we choose this place?”

“Sarah gave us the suite as a gift,” Zia replied, bracing for blowback. To be fair, her wife never asked before this, so she hadn’t volunteered that their boss had supplied the holiday treat.

Dolores narrowed her eyes to slits. “So what’s the catch?”

“No catch.” Zia wrinkled her nose, not entirely sure that wasn’t the case. “But this was a gangster resort. I’m betting this has a ghost or twenty roaming the halls.”

Dolores dropped her head back on the couch pillow. “If some ghost slips into bed with me, you get punched, sweetie.”

“Punch Kane,” Zia volleyed back.

“Bite me.” Kane scowled.

“Later, babe.” Zia patted his shoulder. “We’re due a break, Dolores. Sarah wouldn’t drop us into a hot zone without telling us.”

Dolores shrugged. “Agreed, but I saw you looking up Wendigos.”

“I was just curious about the local baddies.”

“If I end up being crapped out of a ravenous giant cannibal, there’ll be another ghost following you around.” Kane snorted.

Zia ran her finger through his red hair. “I’ll prepare a little salt bomb for that eventuality.”

“Aw, can’t you let me curl into bed with you and Dolores first before you cross me over?”

“Oh sure, no problem,” Zia replied brightly.

Shaking out her short, walnut-hued hair, Dolores stuck up her middle finger.

“I think that’s the general idea, Dolores,” Zia replied, and Dolores giggled, breaking into a laughing jag until she was limp-limbed and red-faced.

Zia, Dolores and Kane all possess the magic to fight monsters but all they want now is a nice Christmas break. Partners in life and at work as monster-slayers for a group known as the Clipeum, they’ve been risking life and limb keeping humanity safe. They’ve won their hard-earned vacation their boss has set up for them: a week in a small hotel in upper Wisconsin. Their boss mentioned in passing it used to be a gangster retreat in the heyday of prohibition.

Married for some time, Zia and Dolores were surprised to have Kane in their life, first at work and now in their hearts. They’re looking forward to their first holiday today as a threesome and the ladies can’t wait to see their first pagan Yule celebration with Kane. All they want is some quiet relaxation. What they get is something entirely different.

Gangster ghosts, would-be witches, over-enthusiastic children, animated snowmen and a century old former gangster moll who has a little spark still in her add up to a not-so-restful Christmas. Zia, Dolores and Kane trade comfy clothing and relaxation for spellcasting and ghost wrangling. Still they might just be able to rescue themselves a Merry Yule from all the chaos.

Running around trying to get ready for the holidays and traveling home which has been delayed because of home repairs.

Here’s more of Ghosts, Gangsters and Garland (which somehow isn’t on Goodreads. Sigh)

Zia sat upright, glancing around the darkened room. Next to her, Dolores slept soundly. Dolores was a champion sleeper, liking ten hours or more, and it was hard to rouse her. Kane, on the other side, stirred, hitching himself up. Like Zia, he slept too lightly.

“Problem?” he whispered.

She shook her head. “Not sure. Feel that?”

He knit up his brow. “Don’t think we’re alone.”

Zia scanned the room and then jutted her chin toward the corner. A small boy stood there next to the antique dresser. The boy didn’t move, making Zia’s skin creep. Well used to ghosts, she never liked it when they stared. She did not sense anything malevolent coming from him. Was he curious? Was he more residual energy with no consciousness behind him? She’d have to investigate to know.

“He’s creeping me out,” Kane said, reaching across Zia to tap Dolores’s shoulder. She didn’t stir.

Zia shook Dolores until she batted at Zia’s hand. “Go ‘way,” she muttered into the pillow.
“We have a visitor,” Zia replied, which woke Dolores up.

It’s been a hard week. I lost my kitty during the middle of finals week. It started Thanksgiving and ended a week later. Kanda had cancer no one knew about and it went to his liver. I miss him very much.

But thanks to every for the fun reception to my Christmas novella, Gangsters Ghosts and Garland the f/f/m gang of monster hunters just trying to have a relaxing holiday. Here’s a little more

Monster hunting was hard; sometimes it was just silly. What Zia hoped for most was that monsters and other craziness would be utterly absent up here in Wendigo country. Nothing would ruin Christmas faster than a ravenous, cannibalistic corpse monster like the Wendigo.

Zia dragged her luggage inside the lobby. With its open sitting room, the space wasn’t quite what she expected. Zia wasn’t sure why she anticipated art deco splendor other than this was once a gangster resort. Back in the prohibition days, Al Capone and his ilk came to the North Woods of Wisconsin for relaxation and to hide out.

I’m almost there for nano 2K left to go. Huzzah. Also managed to make all my finals for monday but now my cat is sick and hasn’t eaten for days. Waiting to hear back on his bloodwork. Sigh.

I have something new (Sorry Brendan we’re leaving you in the attic where the ghost just turned out your flashlight). It’s a Christmas novella about two married women and their boyfriend who all just happen to be monster slayers. They’ve been given a suite by their boss to rest and celebrate the holidays. Boss lady failed to mention it’s a haunted former gangster hotel in upper Wisconsin where things are never actually quiet. (I’ve seen some of these former gangster hideouts as I used to live in the area. Miss it)

It’s a little longer than six sentences but I wanted you to get to meet all three of them.

Zia stretched, getting out of their SUV. The north wind’s attack brutalized her after the long ride in the hot vehicle. The car’s temperature gauge had read eighteen degrees, which seemed optimistic. Dolores exited the SUV, stomping and huffing, immediately blowing on her gloved hands. Originally from Miami, Dolores’s Puerto Rican-Seminole ancestry seemed to prevent her from adapting to cold. That alone might doom this Christmas adventure before it began. Zia reassured herself that her wife had agreed to this, but she might regret it now.

“Damn, it’s cold enough to freeze your nuts straight off,” Kane groaned as he bailed out of the back seat.

“Luckily, Dolores and I have no worries,” Zia replied. Kane had started as their work partner a year and a half ago, but at Halloween, things changed. The affable druid had become their boyfriend. “You, on the other hand…”

“May become the third woman in our merry band of monster hunters,” Kane moaned.

Zia snorted as Dolores hurried to the trunk to yank her luggage out. She wasn’t waiting for them to get a move on. She hauled it at top speed to their hotel without stopping to appreciate their surroundings.

Zia, on the other hand, lingered, studying the building. It looked more like a colonial mansion than a hotel. Its columnated front had been festooned with real boughs of pine. Wreaths decorated three stories’ worth of windows, and pine trees ringed the building without crowding it. They were distant enough to allow sunlight to kiss the building but close enough to assure visitors they were in the north woods.

The semester is over and I can scarcely believe it so now I’m swamped with grading all the things that go with heading into finals which is why I’m behind on reading and even my own cover reveal so the new thing will have to wait until next week.

Have a wee bit more of These Haunted Hills Brendan point of view as he investigates a haunted home with Josh’s team.

The gloominess of the attic held more promise. There was that heaviness he’d experienced in the hotel. Brendan didn’t know if that was just an author’s overactive imagination or if it was possible he had some slight psychic powers. The rational part of him thought that was ridiculous but the part of him who had listened to his Irish grandmother believed it could be true.

Then his flashlight died.

“Brendan, did you turn that off?” Josh asked.
