I feel bad. I’m behind in my reading but this week has had the house next door burning down (on purpose, they were knocking it down but then got the bright idea, let’s set it on fire), broken windshields, making and grading midterms and then four days of my blood sugar going from 350 to 90 and back again over and over which is draining. I will catch up, promise)

I’m continuing with These Haunted HIlls. I’m going nano rebel and finishing this as part of the 50K. I’ve moved them out of the kitchen and they’re at Josh’s house on the couch (Cass in a chair) watching the video evidence of their ghost investigation.

Something huge and heavy jumped up on the couch. Brendan jumped, bumping shoulders with Josh. One of the largest cats he’d ever seen strode across the pillow and parked itself next to him. White fronted, the cat sported a blanket of dark grey tabby.

“Um, Josh…”

“That’s K’ehleyr. She’s curious and friendly. I probably should have asked you if you were allergic before this.”

“I’m not.” He reached over and petted her head. She purred and pushed her massive head into it. “I’ve never seen a cat this big. What is she?”

“Skogkatt. We call them Norwegian Forest Cat and if you think she’s big.” Josh whistled. “Worf!”

A huge tawny tabby ran in, long fur fluttering. It promptly leapt into Josh’s lap.

“Holy crap.”

“Worf’s a Maine Coon.”

“You sure? You’re probably out there catching bobcats with your foxes.” Brendan laughed. “And could you get geekier names for them?”

“He was going to name them Archer and Kiyomi.” Cassia offered,

Josh shot her a glare. “Hush you…though that was true. And now that they’re here you’re never going to be rid of them.”

My plans for this fall weekend were scuttled by the fact it’s freaking 90 degrees out there and I’m not up to another day of slogging around in the heat in cosplay.

Still continuing with the world’s slowest burn and These Haunted Hills Brendan is still exploring Josh’s house (with Cassia in tow)

The spacious kitchen had those very tall cabinets up to thirteen foot ceilings. Brendan never could figure out how women in the eighteen hundreds used those top cabinets. Josh had a nice collection of cast iron skillets on the wall right next to an R2D2 that had handles on it. On closer inspection it was a series of measuring cups.

“Does Josh cook?”

“He enjoys it and he’s not bad. Don’t tell him I told you but he haunts Yummly online. Don’t be surprised if he invites you for dinner.” Cassia yanked open the fridge and fished out three beers. She handed one to him. “Want a glass or is the bottle good for you? The church key is in the drawer next to the skin.”

“Bottle is fine.” Brendan opened the utensil drawer. Why was he not surprised that the bottle opener was another Millennium Falcon. He took it with him into the living room.

This past week was a blur of grading. I know I owe a bunch of comments. Will get there, promise. Today was great fun. I spent the early afternoon being the tifin in a tea duel with my steampunk airship and then on to the Mothman festival. I caught a really good talk by Dana and Greg Newkirk, curators of the Traveling Occult museum. It occurred to me Josh and Brendan would love this stuff.

Speaking of which, here we go, more of These Haunted Hills Brendan is getting his first look at Josh’s house.

On the book shelves he saw the Starship Enterprise, Spike and Angel from Buffy, a small Millennium Falcon, a Harry Potter wand and on the couch was Kevin’s wand from his own series, the one that was a universal channel changer. He couldn’t imagine a more perfect space for Josh. He picked up Kevin’s wand.

Wide eyed Josh snatched it from his hand and tucked it into his pocket, blushing. “Sorry for the mess.”

“I was thinking, this is how I pictured your place. Okay maybe not the blue farm house part but the inside, definitely. It was a good idea to come here. I feel better now.”

“How so?”

“I was going to say you and Cassia know everything about me but that’s not exactly true. You do know a lot and I know very little about you. It’s nice seeing a little more about what makes you tick.”

“You already know the important stuff. I like foxes. I ghost hunt. I’m a huge geek who has an enormous stash of comic books in one of those spare bedrooms I mentioned.” Josh smiled.

I’m running out the door to the Paw Paw festival but I thought I’d get this posted first.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills. Brendan has agreed to go back to Josh’s place (with Cassia in tow) to examine the evidence of their night of ghost hunting.

Brendan wondered if it had been the safe thing to do, agreeing to come to Josh’s house. He knew this could be a bit awkward but why should it be? He was here to do a ghost investigation not anything else. Though Josh’s dimpled chin invited nibbling, which still had the capacity to shock him. Was he finally returning to life?

Pushing that aside, Brendan took stock of Josh’s space. The old farmhouse was nicely done, painted blue which had been a shock. Inside, however, was exactly what he expected. Books everywhere, on the couch, overflowing from book shelves, stacked on a table. Also on that coffee table were several file folders that might be things for him to grade. He knew Josh was in the last week of class which he probably shouldn’t be taking him away from that work. Josh didn’t seem to mind but given his level of fandom he’d probably be willing to pull an all-nighter to be sure he had time for Brendan.

I’m finally settling a bit into this online class I’m teaching but I swear it might be the death of me. It’s not leaving me much time to write and now I’m into full fall festival mode. Love this time of year.

I’m still continuing These Haunted Hills, Josh, Cass and Brendan are wrapping up a late night of ghost hunting and Josh doesn’t want Brendan driving through dark, rural Appalachia by himself. It’s a bit long so I can finish the thought.

“We could do this another time or if you wanted to do it tonight, there are plenty of hotels in the Athens area.” Josh made a face. “I feel guilty making you pay extra for this. We’ll be going back to my house to do the review. I have a couple spare bedrooms and if you were comfortable with that, you can stay there. Sometimes Cass does too.”

“I could stay tonight if need be,” she put in hurriedly. He and she had talked about this at the cabin while Brendan had been poking around. They thought maybe he’d feel less like Josh was trying to put the moves on him if she was there as a buffer.

Brendan shot them a look that said he might think they were high. “I’d be fine with that if it’s not an imposition. It’s already pretty dark outside, right? If you’d rather do the evidence thing another time, I’m fine with that too, but I wouldn’t mind staying the night.”
