I know I owe comments for last week. I’ll get right on that. Between Nano and the last week of the semester, I was swamped, sorry about that. I made nano by the skin of my teeth but there’s still plenty of story left to write there. I’m not sure I’ve survived the semester. I was in a bar where several former students work their way thru school. We were all lamenting how much finals week is going to suck.

I’m switching to my holiday short story Purrfect Holiday (OMG I can’t believe I went with a punny title!) for Dreamspinner’s Warmest Wishes advent calendar. A quick word of introduction since I’m dropping you in in media res, Tony was a veterinarian who can’t practice because of progressive (rapidly) blindness who is living in Saint Augustine Florida (my favorite town in FL) with his grandmother. He’s naturally a bit depressed over this derailing of his life’s dream and oh he and Grandma are HUGE Star Trek fans. Spock is one of his Nonna’s cats. (and ha, original Trek is airing as I post this!) It’s a tiny bit over so it’s not just random lines out of context.

A minute later Nonna, in a bright blue robe, collected Spock. “I have something that might interest you.”

“Oh?”

“Marisol told me our vet, Dr. de Leon, has a part-time position open.”

“Nonna!” Tony snapped. She knew he couldn’t practice anymore, how huge the hole in his heart was because of it. How could she bring it up?

“Let me finish, Antonio Michael.”

He winced. Other than the use of his two names, the only bigger warning sign that he was in trouble was the wooden spoon, which he hadn’t seen since he was a sarcastic teen.

“He’s looking to hire a cat cuddler.”

“I beg your pardon?”

“Cat cuddler. He helps with the local rescue, and there are so many kittens needing socialization that he wants someone to come in and play with them. You’d be excellent.”

It was a far cry from what he’d trained so hard for, but he loved helping animals. He’d take any scrap he could get. “I would love that!”

Blurb – Tony Gatti had his life planned: get his veterinarian license and go to work with his dad and uncle. Soon after achieving his goals, he learned the shadows and blurriness in his vision went beyond needing glasses. Retinitis Pigmentosa is a genetic mutation with no cure. With his sight almost gone, he moves into his grandmother’s St. Augustine, Florida home with his guide dog, Raven, to start life over. Nonna Concetta thinks she knows the perfect job for him. Her vet is looking for someone to destress the cats at a local rescue.

Javier didn’t plan to hire a cute former veterinarian to fill the role of cat cuddler, but Tony couldn’t be more perfect. Worried his attraction is inappropriate and knowing the holiday season always depresses him, Javier wonders if he should ask Tony out, or if he’d just be spreading the gloom to someone who already has enough of his own. But if he takes the plunge, could it turn out to be the best holiday ever?

I can’t believe November is nearly gone. I’m within 15K of finishing nano but this SUCH a busy time of year for me (and for many of us).

Blood Red Roulette came out last week and has gotten some nice reviews. Wish I could track sales a bit better but mostly I’m hoping people enjoy it. I think this will be the last snippet from Blood Red before I switch to the my holiday fic. This is from much later in the story after the villain of the piece has messed with Luc badly.

Luc lunged for her, hearing Arrigo warning him to be careful. All Luc cared about was that Arrigo let him deal with this bitch who had turned his life inside out. He grabbed her, trying to drag her down. Eleni twisted in his grip, her hand coming up. Luc stepped back thinking she had a Taser like George had.

He was completely unprepared for the loud bark of a pistol. Fire tore into his belly. Screaming, Luc hit the pavement. Michael kicked him as he tried to leap over Luc. Eleni fired again, and Michael dropped.

“Luc!” Arrigo cried.

Blurb Arrigo Giancarlo’s friends think he’s a rich young man with the unusual job of paranormal investigator, working with his psychic assistant in Las Vegas. In truth he’s a two-thousand-year-old vampire and member of the Chiaroscuro, a group of Supernaturals dedicated to keeping humanity safe from the more dangerous of their kind. He’s also openly bisexual… but alone.

When he spots Luc St. John in a bar, Arrigo is intrigued. What begins as an effort to repay the kindness shown to him in the past quickly turns into much deeper feelings for the suffering and displaced Cajun. For Luc’s part, he feels too poor, too uneducated, and too bound to his hateful family to ever be worthy of elegant and cultured Arrigo.

An old enemy, Eleni, blames Arrigo for murdering her true love. On the anniversary of that death, she’s back to take revenge. As Arrigo’s closest friends fall victim to savage attacks, he fears nothing will keep Luc safe. Should he break both their hearts and let Luc go, or is it too late? If Luc’s already in Eleni’s sights, Arrigo knows that like most things in Vegas, the odds are against him.

Blood Red Roulette released this week so that’s pretty exciting. All of my research proposals are turned in. I can’t believe the semester is over in two weeks. I swear I just started back to work. As for Nano I’m falling behind.

More of Blood Red today. The Taabu’s referred to here is Arrigo’s friend’s house.

He wished he could have asked Luc to Taabu’s, but throwing someone into a group of unknown people would be a cruel first date. Sure Luc sparked a bit around him, but Arrigo couldn’t tell if the attraction was real or just his fevered imagination. Arrigo wondered about his budding obsession. Maybe because it had been a while since he had wanted something he couldn’t have. His money and power in the Supernatural world meant he usually could have just about anything, and Arrigo admittedly was selfish enough to use that.

Maybe staying away from Luc was for the best. Arrigo probably represented a complication Luc didn’t need. Arrigo wished he didn’t have a weakness for mortals. Life would be easier if he confined himself to other Supernaturals, Often he did, but the fleeting humanity of a mortal enticed him. Arrigo didn’t claim to understand it, but he didn’t fight it. He did his best within the confines of his nature.

As always a big thanks to all the Veterans this veterans day.

My nano isn’t going well because I had THREE different research proposals to get out there. I’m finally done with that and can concentrate. Crosses fingers. I’m not that far behind (30% done).

More from Blood Red Roulette. It releases Tuesday. I’m VERY excited!

“Karma again? What were you in a past life? A serial killer?” Luc’s wide grin took the sting out of his words, but Arrigo flinched nonetheless. He had killed more people over the centuries than a serial killer’s wet dream; granted, most of them had been rogue Supernaturals. Frankly he didn’t mourn their loss or have trouble being the one to end them.

“It does a person good to help others,” Arrigo replied.

“Not in my world,” Luc muttered, mirroring Arrigo’s wince.

Started nano. I managed to do 5000 in one day but today isn’t going as well.(it’s been an exhausting day).

Here’s a bit more from Blood Red Roulette

Something stirred in his gut about the cause of Luc’s injuries. If the drunk had mentioned seeing Luc in an alley with what he thought was another young man, Arrigo didn’t doubt Luc’s father would react violently. He seemed to respond viciously to most things from the few times Arrigo had seen him. Arrigo truly regretted his impulsive would-be snacking. He wished he could make Luc’s family stop hurting him. Vampires could control minds but only briefly and in very limited ways. The effects quickly faded, so the best he could do would be to take the pressure off for a night and only if he spent a good deal of time concentrating on it.

“Okay, I’ll take as many as I can carry, then.”

Luc’s pale brow beetled. “Why are you being so nice? You barely know me.”

“Call it karma.” Arrigo waved the twenty. This time Luc took it. Arrigo stooped and loaded his arms up with several water bottles. “Let’s just say I have the means, and it makes me feel good to help others. Why don’t you go get out of the heat? It’s only going to make your eye worse.”
