Rainbow Snippets

I’ve been so immersed in writing final exams, I forgot it was Saturday! I’m still working on commenting to last week’s round. Happy anniversary to Rainbow Snippets! It’s been a lot of fun.

Here’s something new and coming out soon in the Once Upon a Time in the Weird West anthology by Dreamspinner. It’s from my story Corpse Powder which was a ton of fun to write. Here’s the blurb for my story: Doctor Isaac Adler came to Virginia City, Nevada, to escape the horrors he witnessed during the War between the States. Despite a living in a thriving Jewish community, Isaac’s having trouble finding his faith… and finding work. Just when he’s contemplating leaving the desert, life takes an unexpected turn when the airship Aurora is attacked by pirates and Isaac is called upon to help the wounded.

The ship’s first mate, Tsela “Alexander” Zhani, is also trying to outrun a nightmare, his in the form of the powerful skinwalker who drove him from his Navajo village. Tsela’s friendship with the handsome doctor responsible for saving the lives of his friends gives both men a fragile hope for a better future. But their demons aren’t as far behind them as they thought.

It’s set here: virgina-city-nv

So let’s meet Isaac as he’s trying to board the airship Aurora after she was attacked leaving the doctor many patients to try and save.

Isaac swallowed back a wave of fear as he climbed. He reminded himself the ship was docked and he wouldn’t be flying off anywhere. He couldn’t handle flying. Isaac struggled his way onto the deck, followed by the airman. Waiting for them was one of the most handsome men Isaac had ever seen, in spite of the goose egg forming on his chin. His raven hair swept back into the intricate knot Isaac had noticed on a few of the other Navajo men in town.

Anthology’s Blurb: This isn’t the same old Wild West. The usual suspects are all present: cowboys, outlaws, and sheriffs. There’s plenty of dust, tumbleweeds, horses, and cattle on the range, but there are also magical gems, automatons, elementals, airships… even dinosaurs and genetically modified insects. Roaming among the buffalo and coyotes, you’ll encounter skinwalkers, mad engineers, mythical beings cloaked in darkness, and lovers who stay true to their oaths… even beyond the grave. On this frontier are those at the mercy of their own elaborate devices as well as men whose control of time and space provides a present-day vision of the West. There might even be a dragon hidden amongst the ghost towns and wagon trains.

If you like your Westerns with a splash of magic, a touch of steampunk, and plenty of passionate romance between men, these genre-bending tales will exceed expectations.

Hold on to your hats, cowboys and cowgirls. The West is about to get weird, and you’re in for a hell of a ride.

Rainbow Snippets

I’ve been out visiting the relatives since I came home for the holiday (heading back to OH tomorrow) so I’m late with this and probably can’t read til Monday.)

In December I’ll be in two anthologies and since Love Wins from DSP drops first I thought I’d do the next couple of snippets from that one first. This is from my Kept Tears universe (You can find the novel here.).

This snippet is on the Exterminator, a dark coaster in Kennywood park where they’ve taken Aaron to help boost his spirits.

He shrieked as Aaron whooped. The royal prince of fairies sure can scream like a little girl, Aaron thought, almost feeling bad for Rhys.

The ride ended all too quickly, and Rhys staggered out onto the platform before extending a hand to help Aaron out of the car. “That was terrifying.”

“The word you’re looking for is fun,” Aaron countered.

“Crazy person. I’m in love with a crazy person,” Rhys panted.

Running like mad as I’m presenting at a seminar today. I’ll be reading tonight. In December I’ll be in two anthologies and since Love Wins from DSP drops first I thought I’d do the next couple of snippets from that one first. This is from my Kept Tears universe (You can find the novel here.). Actually the snippet summarizes the plot. Aaron is having a rough time and Rhys and Corrine are there to support him. And for any Pittsburghers in the group, this is set there and highlights one of my favorite things in the area, the historic Kennywood Park.

Snippet: “Next week, it’ll be the anniversary of the day he lost his arm. Aaron withdraws. His mom usually is here to help, but her sister broke her leg and needs help. She wants us to keep him safe.” Corrine’s voice shook. She paused to take a deep breath. “Rhys, Aaron is one of my best friends, but it’s you he loves. Tell me you’re going to be around this week.”

I was half wondering if I would even participate this week between my health issues and the whole depressing events of this week then decided, no I probably need this more than ever. I know I keep ping ponging around story wise but maybe for the next few times I’ll pull from Kept Tears as I’ll have a short story in this verse coming out soon in the Love Wins anthology. Aaron is an injured war vet (and a good choice since it was veterans day yesterday and he’s big on vet’s rights) who lost his arm in the war. Rhys is not what he seems to be: a fantasy author. This is their first real date.

“I have to admit, this is a bit of a surprise,” Rhys said, walking up the marble steps of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History with Aaron. “It’s not your normal first date.”

“I guess we could consider the club a first date of sorts. And I’ve already told you I’m a science nerd.” Aaron smiled, steering Rhys toward one of his favorite areas of the museum.

“Yes, that’s the sort of thing you don’t want to find out months later and wonder, ‘Just who the hell have I been dating?’” Rhys’s blue eyes gleamed with mischief.

Blurb: Having left most of his arm and his self-confidence behind in the Afghanistan desert, young veteran Aaron Santori has enough on his plate learning to use his prosthetic arm. Attending graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh makes life both interesting and challenging. Mentally, he’s ill prepared for meeting Rhys Edwards, a young-adult novelist from Wales and everything Aaron could want in a man. Between the scars from the explosion and his PTSD, he’s reluctant to date. Ready or not, though, Aaron finds himself jumping into the deep end of the relationship waters.

What Aaron couldn’t possibly know is that Rhys isn’t human at all. As a prince of the Tylwyth Teg, Rhys is fae, with a list of enemies he’s accumulated over the past few centuries—among them a former lover, Morcant, who is back to make Rhys’s life miserable. An unwitting pawn in their Machiavellian fae politics, Aaron only knows he’s falling in love, never suspecting love might be his death sentence.
