This week has been awful (and the looming election isn’t making it any better) My uncle’s brain tumor is back and even with the surgery he has months left. My own health tumbled even further with the MRI results showing every disc in my lumbar spine are beginning to shrivel up contributing to some of my issues.

But we’re not here to listen to the problems. We’re here for the snippet. It’s after Halloween but I’m sticking with the spooky as I debate writing another story for Josh and Brendan.

The eerie sound echoed again. “Wind, right? Please wind? Oh my god! Did you rent me a haunted cabin?”

“Would I rent you Spook Central?” Josh aimed for innocent Boy Scout with his tone.

Brendan snorted. “I distinctly remember you saying ‘Mr. Halloran, I have the perfect cabin for you, and the landlord is willing to rent it for a month since it’s still off season.’”

“Yes, sounds about right.”

“Did you rent me a haunted cabin?”

“You wanted to immerse yourself with ghost hunting.”

“Oh my fucking god!” Brendan flopped onto the bed. “You’re unbelievable.”

Blurb: Young wildlife conservation professor, Joshua Zimmerman, adores foxes, steampunk, and paranormal investigation. As a geek of the first order, Josh is a collector of nerdy memorabilia and tattoos, and he’s an avid steampunk cosplayer. When his favorite author hires him for some ghost hunting for his new project, Josh can hardly believe his luck.

As an author of the wildly successful urban fantasy series, The Green Tablet, Brendan Halloran should have it all. And he did until his young son, Connor, died of cancer. Heartbroken and drowning in grief, Brendan stops writing, stops living his life. His marriage has disintegrated, leaving Brendan trapped in the moment Connor died.

When Brendan rents a cabin in Ohio’s Hocking Hills, it’s ostensibly to research his next book, an adult paranormal tale. Brendan hires a local professor who is an expert on the paranormal, thinking if he does pull out of his tail spin and makes good on his plan to write a new book, he might as well do it right. And the perfect place to investigate could be the remains of an old hotel constructed to suit the serial killer who built it.

Brendan finds himself swept away, completely unprepared for the joy and enthusiasm Josh brings to everything he does. Step by step, Brendan reenters life. His head might not be convinced he’s ready to love again, but his heart disagrees. Unfortunately for him, the ghost is every bit as vicious as the killer was in life, and he and Joshua have a target on their backs.

I’ve been tied up mentally with going through closets and clearing them out and it brought me into the quagmire of my career ending injury, the lawsuits and paperwork around all of that so I’m behind in commenting (Sorry the depression level is high).

Sliding in late with this, just a little more spooky stuff with Brendan and Josh.

He handed the phone to Josh before picking up his coffee. Josh tapped the screen, making the haunting cry echo in the diner. An elderly couple glanced at them from their table across the way. Josh chuckled.

Brendan narrowed his eyes. “You promised not to laugh!”

“Man, now I want to come to your place at night.” Josh bounced in his chair, and—as Brendan sputtered into his coffee—went redder than the morning sunrise. “God! I didn’t mean it like that. Why can’t I talk around you? I swear, I don’t normally blurt out inappropriate shit.”

Things are still going sideway here but I did get some good news. The stent in my leg is still holding (but it will eventually fail and I’ll have to have the leg revascularized). I haven’t gotten to go out on any paranormal investigations lately because of the issues with the leg.

However my characters Brendan and Josh from These Haunted Hills got in all kinds of paranormal investigations which I tried to keep true (ish) to how it really goes….well we tend to hope it doesn’t go as it goes in the murder hotel. It’s a good book for the spooky time of year.

Brendan had to admit that more of the heaviness disappeared when Josh pulled the truck away from the Crooked Pines Lodge. He twisted on the seat, watching the building slowly swallowed by the woods. “I’m so glad I hired you as a guide. I would never have found this place on my own in spite of reading a bit online. Even if I had, I don’t know if I’d have been brave enough to go in.”

I’m not so sure. You did well.”

Yeah, I didn’t piss myself when things went sideways, so I’m counting my restraint as a win,” Brendan said dryly.

Sliding in super last because I did four festivals in four days and I’m beat. I had such a great time at the Mothman Festival this year though.

Since it is spooky season I’m going back a little in time to my paranormal novella, Cassadaga Nights set in the psychic town of Cassadaga, FL where I used to live.

Ryan drew his shield over himself, letting his psychic senses dampen down. All day, most days, he dropped his armor, walking around exposed, vulnerable on all sides to the flood of stimuli. Such was the life of a professional psychic. He was unable to cut himself off when he was on the job. His clients depended on his abilities. While he could cold read a person to give Houdini a run for his money, Ryan was the real deal when it came to being psychic. Houdini would have had a helluva time debunking his abilities.

Blurb – Santino Bellomi and his coworker, Cam, are sent to Cassadaga, Florida by the Aspida Pneuma, a group of psychics and mages. Their job is to rescue a nixie from a polluted lake and to check out the town, which is known for its psychics. New recruits to the Aspida are always welcome and where better than a spiritualist camp to hunt for them? What Santino wants most, however, is to finish the assignment quickly. He isn’t a fan of heat and humidity, and he’d looking forward to a well-earned vacation once the mission is over.

Ryan Doyle grew up in Cassadaga, where being psychic runs in the family. Ryan has never roamed far from home, though it’s hard being a geeky gay, wannabe urban fantasy author living in a small town. His job as one of the town psychics is fairly routine until he meets someone new. Ryan has never encountered anyone with a psychic shield so strong until Santino sits down for a reading. Intrigued, he asks Santino out even though Santino is as secretive as he is fun.

Santino hopes to win Ryan over both for himself and for the Aspida. And he’s hoping his skills in the kitchen will swing the balance in his favor. Ryan has almost given up on finding love, living in rural Florida. Can a seductive tourist be the answer to his dreams?

Things never run smoothly for those in the Aspida. What should have been a simple rescue mission is plagued by mosquitoes, enraged ghosts, and someone or something draining residents of their life force. Ryan’s first foray into adventure may be his last.

I think this will be the last post of my SF wip until after Spooky Season. I’d like to bring you some of those soon. Until then here you go. Kaleo is done with his shower.

As he stepped out of the shower, Kaleo froze. Smoke sat there watching him.

“Fuck!”

That was all he needed, to get his privates bit off by Shyroth’s monster cat-thing. She watched him as he grabbed the towel and dry off. She did rub on his naked leg once he tried to get past her. It sent a shiver up him. Damn, why did every touch feel like an invite to ‘let’s get horizontal’ to him? He’d never been like that until the Toy house. Still, Smoke didn’t seem threatening, more like a cat wanting attention.
