Sunday Small Talk

Happy mother’s day.

I’ve been quiet because I’ve been busy editing. I had to get Blood Red Roulette done and then I had to edit the SF novella before the deadline got here and once that was done, BRR was back for edits again, right in the middle of the last two weeks of my semester.

It was taking me forever on the edits as it was (day job has a lot of hours involved) so I didn’t think it was smart or right to divert my attention too much.

Now that I probably won’t see BRR back for at least another week or two, I’m trying to get a Christmas story done and I think the deadline was moved up. Yikes. I’m not sure it’s going well. I have the idea but man, contemporary is not my thing. Hopefully I can pull it off as a short story.

I’m eyeing the open call at Less Than Three press for a post apocalyptic solarpunk leaning story but my writing mojo which was so strong this winter is dwindling. That’s depressing but I’m hoping the summer off will help me recharge.

I’m off to Rathacon in a few and then I get to drive in a monster storm to go home for Mother’s Day. That should be fun. Head desk (I never actually go home for MOther’s Day but I’ll be house sitting for my brother the whole week).

And oh, since this came up last week, These Haunted Hills is a WIP so yeah if you see any typos or the like, please feel free to point them out. I will not be offended and will be thankful since I was obviously blind to them!

We’re still in the truck here. For contest, Brendan has told Josh he doesn’t want to talk about ghosts any more (as a) he’s trying to order his thoughts for his novel and b) he’s freaking himself out).

“I’ll have to find something else to talk about. Maybe something not geeky. I’d hate to give you the wrong impression.” Joshua smiled.

Brendan suspected he already knew the sort of man Joshua was. Hell, he liked Josh’s geekiness. “Do we even have non-geeky things to talk about?”

“Sure, we can talk about who makes better beer, us Germans or you Irish.”

“I have one word for you: Guinness.” Brendan grinned.

“And I have one for you, Weihenstephan.”

So yeah I didn’t get a chance to read in the last two weeks. It’s been too busy. The steampunk symposium was a great time and I might get a chance to do something creatively with it next year. Fingers crossed. Then it was finals and graduation today. I’m still exhausted. So the only thing left for me to do is edits but I can do that and comment too.

I’m picking right back up with These Haunted Hills. Brendan and Josh are in the truck leaving the haunted hotel.

(Brendan) “Could it have gone really bad in there? You know, like in the movies. Can these ghosts possess someone?”

Joshua wrinkled his nose, not answering right away. “There have been documented cases but not from a simple ghost hunt, at least not that I’ve read. Usually it’s either someone living in a haunted house for long periods of time or more likely a medium who can actually talk to ghost, if you believe in that sort of thing. They often invite the ghosts to pass through them or use them to communicate and that seems to go badly. What you need to worry about more is picking up a hitchhiker. It’s been known to happy. You go into a haunted house. The ghost likes you and goes home with you.”

Brendan cocked up his eyebrows. “You didn’t think to mention that beforehand.”

“I’m pretty sure it was in one of the original emails. Of course, not being a medium, I’ll have no idea if either of us are going home with a supernatural plus-one.”

I am all but weeping in the face of everything I have to do (read last week of classes, a trip and another round of edits on the long novel and ditto the novella). I might be slow in reading everything but I WILL read it.

Also I had a blast at the Ohioana book festival last weekend. If you like gothic/gaslight paranormals and get the chance to talk Leanna Renee Hieber, do. She’s a blast (she’ll also be at the steampunk thing that’s coming up next weekend that I’m going to in Cincinnati).

I’m continuing with These Haunted Hills (camp nano has been a failure due to the endless edits) I jumped a wee bit ahead. They went back into the hotel briefly, it had gone quiet and now they’re leaving. It’s a wee bit over seven lines just to capture the complete thought.

Brendan had to admit to himself when Joshua pulled the truck away from Diana’s hotel, more of the heaviness disappeared. He twisted on the seat, watching the inn slowly swallowed by the woods. “I’m so glad I hired you as a guide. I would never have found this place on my own in spite of reading a bit online. Even if I had, I don’t know that I’d have been brave enough to go in.”

“I don’t know about that. You did well.”

“Yeah, I didn’t piss myself when things went sideways so I’m counting that as a win,” Brendan said dryly.

Joshua chuckled. “Fair point.”

“Came close, not going to lie.” Brendan smiled.

“You would not be the first. Not me, mind you but we did take this one big burly would-be ghost hunter and he crapped himself. It was not a good ride home so you’re way ahead of him.”

“Good to know. Might have to put that in the book, make the character something of an arrogant douchebag so no one will be too upset.”
