Missed last week because I was at the steampunk symposium in a hotel with the world’s most unreliable internet and then went right into finals week so I wouldn’t have had time to read anyone’s. Technically I’m at graduation today but I’ll have the rest of the week to read.

I’m still working with These Haunted Hills. I’ve skipped ahead just a little to the next chapter where Joshua takes Brendan to the Ridges (the Athens Lunatic Asylum) to talk ghosts. It’s a tad over six sentences (I think it’s 8)

Brendan stared at his feet, toes near a cracked, small boxy headstone bearing only a number. “They didn’t even give them names, not even in death.”

Joshua swallowed hard. He hadn’t planned to bring Brendan to the Ridges’s cemetery when he drove the man up to the old asylum. He didn’t want to stir up shit memories for the man. Coffee at the Donkey cafe had gone well. Brendan didn’t fuss at all as Joshua helped him put the sites he most wanted to see in a logical order for them to attack them. Better yet, once he’d settled down and realized Joshua truly wasn’t going to fanboy all over him, Brendan chatted with him like they’d been buddies for years. He didn’t want to lose that. “No, there are records somewhere with the names but no one came to claim these poor people.”

This is from the above mentioned graveyard. You can see the numbered headstone in the back (though Margaret’s family at least gave her a named stone too). I pulled the freaking corn out of the grave before I left her.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills. And happy Earth Day!

The snippet begins with Brendan laying out his plans for his ghost hunting trip.

“I had more thoughts on what I’d mot like to see beside Crooked Pines. You can decide how best to tackle them and if it’s worth trying.”

“Sure. Actually, if you want, we can drive into Athens. I can show you the Ridges which is a must-see and we can grab lunch or a coffee and sit down with your list.”

“That sounds good. Have to admit, I’m a night owl. When you said to meet here so early I was aghast,” Brendan chuckled.

Joshua snorted. “Not my idea either. Blame the scout masters.

Here is a shot of an upcoming scene where they’re at the Ridges cemetery (yes these are tombstones for the patients of the Ridges (actual name Athens Lunatic Asylum)). They are unmarked except for a number which in theory matches up with a name in the files.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills, still not writing nearly enough for Camp Nano. Sigh. This picks up after Brendan shows disbelief that the ghost haunting the cave is that of a 1920s lady (and that is the real haunting ascribed to the area and Joshua’s answer below is about as best we have as far as answers are concerned. (and sorry I think it’s 8 sentences today, is bad).

“I agree though this was a popular place at the turn of the century with various lodges and small hotels in the region like the one we’ll investigate. There was even a small town near here but it’s long gone. While many night time hikes have reported seeing the lady, even ones not here specifically to ghost hunt, I’ve not see her nor have I found any records of anyone dying here.”

“Do you always look into the records for the haunted you investigative?”

“Yes, I’m first and foremost a scientist. I like collaborating evidence. Here at Ash Cave the best I can do is say it’s highly likely to have seen some death, but none I can document. I do have some evps I can let you hear.”

Brendan straightened, eyes bright. “Really? I’d love that.”

Here’s a little proof of the long term activity in the area. Some of these date back to the early 1800s but the one here is turn of the last century. For some reason we feel the need to carve our names into everything.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills which I’ve not been having as much time for in Camp Nano as I would like (both camp and nano end up in the all-time worst months for professors). It picks up where we left off last week where Josh outs himself to Brendan (almost immediately and much to his chagrin. Well he IS nervous about meeting one of his idols).

“Glossing over my runaway mouth, back to Ash cave which got its name for all the mounds of ash found here, we think it was from the long term use by the Native Americans, probably the Shawnee or Wyandotte. But it was used by White settlers, too and even as a pulpit. So there is some interesting history here.”

“Is the haunting one of the Shawnee?”

“There have been a few evps that might suggest that but the ghost most commonly seen here is a woman who looks like she’s from the 1920s.”

‘Really? A lady in twenties garb?”

And here, Ash cave from the far rim. photo DSCN0082_zpsfq1vt3em.jpg

I think I still owe some comments from last week. Sigh. It’s the last month of the semester which always turns into insanity and Camp Nano starts today! I will be working on this story for it (in part, I have two projects).

I’m sticking with These Haunted Hills and Brendan has just asked Josh to tell him about Ash Cave. It’s slightly over 6 sentences but they’re short and I wanted it to make sense….

“The cave is about seven hundred feet long and about a hundred deep. The waterfall cascading around us is from the east fork of Queer Creek.”

Brendan arched one of his eyebrows. “Really?”

Joshua shrugged. “Didn’t name it and I’m sure it means the strange sort of queer, not the me kind.” His face flamed. “Did I say that out loud?”

“You did.”

And here you go, Queer Creek spilling over the rim of Ash Cave.

Doing this on the fly today, just back from the Ohio Academy of Science: Science Fair (as a judge) and zooming off to a friend’s play.

I’m sticking with These Haunted Hills This takes place directly after Brendan got a little uptight about being fan boyed over and Joshua assured him there would be no overt fanboying.

Tension relaxed in Brendan’s bearded jaw. “Thanks. I would love to go on a ghost hunt if you can arrange that.”

“Definitely. We can take you to a couple of places, the Moonville tunnel and of course the Crooked Pine hotel because that’s where we’ll be concentrating our efforts. I think it’s perfect for what you’re describing as the plot of your novel.”

“Excellent. So tell me more about Ash Cave.”

And here is inside the Moonville tunnel, some ‘street art’ of one of the ghosts that supposedly haunts the tunnel (she was killed by the train that ran thru the tunnel. I took this one on my own ghost hunt here. BTW, the hotel which will end up the haunted focus of the story, however, doesn’t exist in the real world).

I’m continuing with These Haunted Hills. This is picking up where last week left off with the bit of tension as Brendan realizes Josh is one of his fan boys. Also Josh’s ghost hunting partner is in need of a name which is why she’s still just () in the text!

“I was thinking that after this we can go somewhere, maybe grab something to eat or drink and go over possible places and the best way to go about viewing them. Also if you want to go on a ghost hunt with me and my team mate, that can be arranged but I warn you, () is a fan girl too. She’ll behave herself though.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

The mirthless quality to those words created a shiver along Joshua’s skin.
