It’s been another long week of not getting nearly enough writing done but at least I made a wee bit of progress but not much on These Haunted Hills. I’ll be picking up right where I left off last week but I think next week I’ll jump a little ahead to Joshua.

But first another picture of Brendan’s first destination in the Hocking Hills, Ash Cave.

We’re picking up with Brendan going to the titular website to check out local haunted locales and the man who runs the ghost hunting site. I went a couple lines over this time because it helped firm up who Brendan is and why he’s in a lonely cabin in the woods.

Brendan brought up the These Haunted Hills website to see what he should look at first. Dr. Joshua Zimmerman’s picture was in the upper corner. One sign that Brendan wasn’t completely dead inside was how cute he thought Joshua was. Almost too boyish to be believable as an accomplished PhD. teaching ecology at a local university, his picture looked more like he was an undergrad. It could be an old one or that bright smile belied the amount of years behind it.

What Brendan wanted to see most was Crooked Pines, a former lodge that was now abandoned and theoretically too haunted to be reclaimed. There was a story in that, Brendan needed to dig it out. His agent still wasn’t sold on him writing a more adult ghost story but it had been three years since the end of his young adult series. He’d written nothing, though the adventures of Selena and Will had generated more than enough money to live his life out a couple times over.

I’m still sharing from There Haunted Hills. I’d better get back to writing it! I’m struggling to write anything right now. I have a rough semester this time out and by the time I get home and do all the work I have to do, I’m too tired to write. Sigh.

This picture is jumping ahead a little to where Brendan will first meet Joshua. This is Ash cave in the Hocking Hills, near Logan, Ohio.

The snippet continues directly from when he got his coffee and has sat down on the futon to try and settle in (and it finally hints as to why he’s in this cabin in the woods, other than as a potential site to commit suicide in).

Flipping on the TV, he reassured himself there was actually a functioning satellite and ditto the wifi for the computer so there wouldn’t be some Overlook-The Shining isolation driven craziness going on. Brendan powered up his computer, wondering if he should remove the paperweight of a galaxy he had as a wallpaper. Kristen had shared her opinions on it the last time she had seen him, and they had been as negative as they had been loud. He pushed it from his mind. He checked his emails, let Kristen know he’d made it safety. He saw no emails from his agent, his best friend Jonathan nor the man who he’d hired to show him around to the haunted sites in the Hocking Hills and the surrounding towns.

I’m continuing with These Haunted Hills even though the work on it is STILL very slow.

This is Queer Creek (no, really) that wends its way around the Hocking Hills and is part of the various small waterfalls.

We’re still with Brendan this week (Maybe next week I’ll fast forward to Joshua’s pov). This snippet is directly after last week’s and it showcases Brendan’s mental state at the start of the story.

Brendan could see giving in to the grief in a quiet place like this. They wouldn’t know until his month’s worth of rent was up. He shuddered and forced himself away from the window. He busied himself with unpacking. He braved the lashing rain to grab his computer bag and three canvas bags of groceries out of the car. His mood lifted to an inch above the floor once he filled the cabin with the scent of coffee.

For the first snippet of the new year I’m doing something I’ve never done: sharing something brand new in its raw form. Literally I have only about six paragraphs of this one but its one of the projects I want to finish this year, something close to contemporary. Okay there are ghost hunters in it but done in a realistic way (okay, one of the leads (not in this snippet) is based very loosely on a friend here who is in fact a ghost hunter). It’s called at the moment These Haunted Hills and is set where I live in Appalachian Ohio, the Hocking Hills (technically I live a bit south west of here but I can be here within the hour). Brendan is a man whose been through a lot and is an author of a popular middle grade/YA series whose come to the hills to investigate ghosts for his next, more adult novel but more important, he’s running from his problems.

This is what I had in mind for the cabin in the snippet. This is from Crooked Creek Cabin rentals which is in the area.

Brendan second guessed his decision the moment he walked through the cabin’s front door even though it was exactly what he wanted: a cabin in the woods. The cold spring deluge that lashed him from car to porch hadn’t helped matters much. To Brendan the shower embodied perfectly the condition of his mind and soul.

Leaving his bag on the doorstep, Brendan took in his home for the next month. It could almost be called cute in a rustic sort of way. The loft bedroom perched above the open concept living area and kitchen.

Something a little different today (because I’m probably running the ragged edge of what you can share of from a short story, and Once Upon a Time in the Weird West released yesterday, so exciting). Since we’re nearing the holidays, I thought I’d share a little of my holiday stuff. This is a snippet from The Light in Winter which was part of one of Dreamspinner’s advent calendars. I drew from my time in Wales doing a research fellowship on Neolithic sites for this (that and I sort of follow a druidic path). Gareth is a professor at the University of Aberystwyth and a Druid. Warun is a Christian doctor. Their schedules have put a huge strain on their relationship so for the holidays Gareth surprised Warun with a romantic trip to some of the historic sites he loves so much and the story ends with him sharing the Druid ritual of Alban Arthan (The Light of Arthur), the Solstice, with Warun for the first time. So we get to see a lot of this place, Bryn Celi Ddu, one of my favorite Neolithic sites in Wales photo 100_1750_zpshsjkerxw.jpg (Granted, I’m pretty sure the powers that be wouldn’t be too happy if people spent the longest night of the year inside this passage grave, but I could be wrong).

They had traveled to Beaumaris Castle next, which had been a good choice. He pulled Gareth over to the moat, ticking a finger against his camera. “Selfie time.”
“You are so silly.” Gareth posed with him regardless. “It’s really a perfect castle.”

“Moats, turrets, concentric wall-in-wall construction:, you’re right.” Warun slipped his hand into Gareth’s as they headed inside. Aberystwyth Castle was only ruins, like so many others in Wales, but Beaumaris was perfect. Maybe he should plan a castle hop as a gift for Gareth next time, or a tour of holy wells. He was beginning to understand the importance of being in nature to the druids, why his lover went into ecology as a career. The look of peace on Gareth’s face as they had trekked to the holy well made it clear.

BlurbDr. Gareth Evans and his medical doctor partner, Warun Jones, are having trouble making time for each other between end of term craziness for Gareth and holiday-related injuries pouring into the hospital for Warun. Gareth has planned what he hopes will be the perfect recipe for relieving the tension and bringing them back together. While Warun wants Gareth to partake in Plygain, a traditional dawn service of hymn singing for Christmas, Gareth plans to take Warun to Bryn Celli Ddu and introduce him to the Druid ritual of Alban Arthan, the celebration of the winter solstice.

I’ve been so immersed in writing final exams, I forgot it was Saturday! I’m still working on commenting to last week’s round. Happy anniversary to Rainbow Snippets! It’s been a lot of fun.

Here’s something new and coming out soon in the Once Upon a Time in the Weird West anthology by Dreamspinner. It’s from my story Corpse Powder which was a ton of fun to write. Here’s the blurb for my story: Doctor Isaac Adler came to Virginia City, Nevada, to escape the horrors he witnessed during the War between the States. Despite a living in a thriving Jewish community, Isaac’s having trouble finding his faith… and finding work. Just when he’s contemplating leaving the desert, life takes an unexpected turn when the airship Aurora is attacked by pirates and Isaac is called upon to help the wounded.

The ship’s first mate, Tsela “Alexander” Zhani, is also trying to outrun a nightmare, his in the form of the powerful skinwalker who drove him from his Navajo village. Tsela’s friendship with the handsome doctor responsible for saving the lives of his friends gives both men a fragile hope for a better future. But their demons aren’t as far behind them as they thought.

It’s set here: virgina-city-nv

So let’s meet Isaac as he’s trying to board the airship Aurora after she was attacked leaving the doctor many patients to try and save.

Isaac swallowed back a wave of fear as he climbed. He reminded himself the ship was docked and he wouldn’t be flying off anywhere. He couldn’t handle flying. Isaac struggled his way onto the deck, followed by the airman. Waiting for them was one of the most handsome men Isaac had ever seen, in spite of the goose egg forming on his chin. His raven hair swept back into the intricate knot Isaac had noticed on a few of the other Navajo men in town.

Anthology’s Blurb: This isn’t the same old Wild West. The usual suspects are all present: cowboys, outlaws, and sheriffs. There’s plenty of dust, tumbleweeds, horses, and cattle on the range, but there are also magical gems, automatons, elementals, airships… even dinosaurs and genetically modified insects. Roaming among the buffalo and coyotes, you’ll encounter skinwalkers, mad engineers, mythical beings cloaked in darkness, and lovers who stay true to their oaths… even beyond the grave. On this frontier are those at the mercy of their own elaborate devices as well as men whose control of time and space provides a present-day vision of the West. There might even be a dragon hidden amongst the ghost towns and wagon trains.

If you like your Westerns with a splash of magic, a touch of steampunk, and plenty of passionate romance between men, these genre-bending tales will exceed expectations.

Hold on to your hats, cowboys and cowgirls. The West is about to get weird, and you’re in for a hell of a ride.

I’ve been out visiting the relatives since I came home for the holiday (heading back to OH tomorrow) so I’m late with this and probably can’t read til Monday.)

In December I’ll be in two anthologies and since Love Wins from DSP drops first I thought I’d do the next couple of snippets from that one first. This is from my Kept Tears universe (You can find the novel here.).

This snippet is on the Exterminator, a dark coaster in Kennywood park where they’ve taken Aaron to help boost his spirits.

He shrieked as Aaron whooped. The royal prince of fairies sure can scream like a little girl, Aaron thought, almost feeling bad for Rhys.

The ride ended all too quickly, and Rhys staggered out onto the platform before extending a hand to help Aaron out of the car. “That was terrifying.”

“The word you’re looking for is fun,” Aaron countered.

“Crazy person. I’m in love with a crazy person,” Rhys panted.
